Monet was born on November 14, 1840 on the fifth floor of 45 rue Laffitte, in the ninth arrondissement of Paris.[3] He was the second son of Claude-Adolphe and Louise-Justine Aubrée Monet, both of them second-generation Parisians. On May 20, 1841, he was baptized in the local parish church, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette as Oscar-Claude. [3] In 1845, his family moved to Le Havre in Normandy. His father wanted him to go into the family grocery store business, but Claude Monet wanted to become an artist. His mother was a singer. On the first of April 1851, Monet entered the Le Havre secondary school of the arts. He first became known locally for his charcoal caricatures, which he would sell for ten to twenty francs. Monet also undertook his first drawing lessons from Jacques-François Ochard, a former student of Jacques-Louis David. Only 220 km from Cape Town, this 71 000-ha mountain complex is managed by Cape Nature Conservation, principally for conservation of the pure, silt-free water of this catchment area, as a recreation area (one of the few areas in this country where visitors can enjoy the ‘wilderness experience’) and as a sanctuary for the bio diverse Cape fynbos.

The Cederberg is so diverse in form and structure, so valuable for its plants and animals and so unique in its landscape, that any nature lover, hiker or mountaineer will find its opportunities and challenges difficult to exhaust.

An extensive network (254 km) of unmarked, well maintained footpaths are laid out, and excellent rock climbing opportunities exist.

The Wolfberg Cracks and Arch, the Maltese Cross and Sneeuberg are each the subject of a separate popular day walk from the private farms adjoining the wilderness area in the south.

Erosional processes in the Cedarberg have fashioned a bizarre landscape highlighted by such famous natural rock sculptures as the Maltese Cross and the Wolfberg Arch.

The highest peak, Sneeuberg (2 028 m), is one of the few homes of one of the world’s rarest plants, Protea cryophila, the snow protea.

Another unusual species found in the Cederberg is the Clanwilliam cedar, Widdringtonia cedarbergensis, after which the mountain range is named.

Over-exploitation and uncontrolled burning threatened the tree with extinction, but today the Clanwilliam cedar is protected in this wilderness area.

It is hoped that fewer fires and careful management will foster its growth.

Two plants of considerable economic importance – rooibos tea (Aspalathus linear is) and round-leaved buchu (Agathosma betulma) – are also present.

Animal life is diverse in species but not high in numbers, as a result of the low breeding rate, the reasons for which are not yet clear.

Mammals commonly seen include baboon, dassie, grey rhebok and klipspringer.

Bird diversity is not great (81 species) but the fynbos specials – sugar birds, orange breasted sun birds, ground woodpeckers, Cape rock jumpers, and others – are present, in addition to the frequently sighted black eagles, rock kestrels and jackal buzzards. Geckos, lizards and agamas are commonly seen on the rocks.

Hundreds of rocky overhangs and caves safeguard fine examples of rock art paintings that may be anything from 300 to 6 000 years old, and form an integral part of the wilderness area’s fascination.

Cederberg has a number of self-catering cottages.

Reservations for the cottages include day-walks to Waterval, the old Uitkyk Pass and the circular route from Uitkyk to Algeria.

Please note rates exclude December & January school holiday period.

The zero street sits in the space under the freeway. This space is dead, and has been for some time. It has been packed with storage facilities, parking lots, and debris, but nothing much for living things. There is no real reason to engage this dead space. It is loud with the blare of passing traffic, trucks and trains, layered in the grit of industrial and automotive particulate pollution, and its air choked with dangerous gasses. How can architecture begin to reclaim the space of erasure created by freeways? How can such reclamation begin to allow for a comprehensive urban landscape? The answer necessarily deals with questions of memory, marginalization, and change over time. The Zero Street offers an access point into the wasteland, and avenue for architectural extractions. A Zero Street contains properties that have been zeroed out in public databases. Widths, lengths, sidewalks, and addresses appear as zeros, representing erasure. Fragments of the erased streets remain, abandoned to collect debris and detritus. Traces of these fragments can be found in geographic databases and maps. Architecture must be drawn directly out of the existing environment, building on the palimpsest, capitalizing on the zero. Architecture must adapt to the temporal and recurrent character of the space of erasure. The constructed manifestation of these principles will exist between temporal and permanent, local and global, unique and nonspecific. It will adapt to variations over time …

Thornhill Farm, Fairford, Gloucestershire: An Iron Age and Roman pastoral site in the Upper Thames Valley (THAMES VALLEY LANDSCAPES) Overview

For over 500 years, from the middle Iron Age to the early Roman period, the 1st gravel terrace of the river Thames at Thornhill Farm appears to have been lived in and worked as a cattle ranch. Extensive excavations by Oxford Archaeology between 1986 and 1989 revealed large parts of the settlement, including paddocks, stock enclosures and droveways, all designed to control and manage the herds of animals. Evidence for domestic houses points to small family groups living at the site and tending to the livestock. The surrounding gravel terraces and floodplain would have formed open pastureland, upon which lay a number of other settlements, some of which were also operating specialist pastoral economies. The settlement at Thornhill Farm was constantly being developed and remodelled until the early 2nd century AD, when it was replaced by a series of trackways and some of the earliest hay meadows in Britain. What happened to the inhabitants of Thornhill Farm at this time is unknown, but it seems likely that the whole settlement was subsumed into a larger agricultural estate based at neighbouring Claydon Pike. The excavations at Thornhill Farm formed part of a co-ordinated archaeological response to the threat posed by gravel extraction during the creation of the Cotswold Water Park. This book presents the results of this phase of work, and discusses the significance of the site within the local and regional landscape.
