A Tour of the Cryosphere / Educational Animation Video

January 25th, 2012

A Tour of the Cryosphere. Courtesy of NASA. Credits at the end of the video. The cryosphere consists of those parts of the Earth’s surface where water is found in solid form, including areas of snow, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost, ice sheets, and icebergs. In these regions, surface temperatures remain below freezing for a portion of each year. Since ice and snow exist relatively close to their melting point, they frequently change from solid to liquid and back again due to fluctuations in surface temperature. Although direct measurements of the cryosphere can be difficult to obtain due to the remote locations of many of these areas, using satellite observations scientists monitor changes in the global and regional climate by observing how regions of the Earth’s cryosphere shrink and expand. This animation portrays fluctuations in the cryosphere through observations collected from a variety of satellite-based sensors. The animation begins in Antarctica, showing ice thickness ranging from 2.7 to 4.8 kilometers thick along with swaths of polar stratospheric clouds. In a tour of this frozen continent, the animation shows some unique features of the Antarctic landscape found nowhere else on earth. Ice shelves, ice streams, glaciers, and the formation of massive icebergs can be seen. A time series shows the movement of iceberg B15A, an iceberg 295 kilometers in length which broke off of the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000. Moving farther along the coastline, a time series of the Larsen

FREE WILLY À LA JAMAICA

January 22nd, 2012

ROSE HALL, MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA – February 19, 2010: The Palmyra Resort & Spa, celebrated a successful whale rescue on Saturday, when a huge Cuvier Beaked whale decided to swim into the white sand swimming cove of Jamaicas fashionable luxury beachfront community, surprising owners, guests and staff. The 15 feet long and 1200 pound mammal, which was spotted swimming in the shallow waters in close proximity to the resort’s beach around noon on Saturday, appeared to have followed a school of fish into the private swimming cove. The mammal stayed in the shallow waters for almost half-an-hour giving dozens of visitors the chance to have a close look at the magnificent creature, which quickly earned the nickname The Palmyra Whale. Said General Manager Lester Scott: “It swam around and around and nearly beached itself a couple of times, and we tried to usher it back out to the ocean. Scott immediately called two mammal specialists from a nearby resort to come and help the whale back into deep water. Appearing disoriented, the huge mammal experienced difficulty when attempting to pass the outside underwater groyne, which protects the swimming cove of the premier retreat. Due to a combination of low tide and oncoming waves, the Cuvier Beaked whale struggled on the barrier for approximately 20 minutes before marine mammal specialist Deloy Peharie and a landscape architect Kevin Rosen jumped into the water to help the whale. After several attempts, the mammal was successfully guided
